Canon have just launched the 7D, an 18mp APS-C camera. I've been reading the reaction on forums and looking at the sample shots and a couple of things have struck me...

1. The sample shots seem to have a very processed look, too much so for me personally as I like a more natural look.

2. There are a lot of Canon fanboys who don't seem to want to accept that a higher mp count usually goes hand in hand with higher noise. Personally I don't want to rely on state of the art noise reduction and spend hours in post processing only to end up making my shots look like plastic.

Here's a couple of links -

I hate processing photos.  Some of those do look a bit on the bold side with too sharp lines.

I like my camera as I very rarely have to do anything to the photos and TBH the amount that it gets used could never justify a new DSLR for a very long time.

Yup.

I think that my 20D does pretty much everything I want but I would be stuck for what to replace it with if it died. I shoot RAW but I don't do an awful lot of processing and I don't think that I'll ever produce shots that look as plastic and processed as some of those samples. I suppose they'll look great in a glossy mag but I don't think that style is for me.

On the subject of processing...

I took this and tried to make it look like it's in the style of Julia Margaret Cameron. It's not posed whereas hers would have been. Any comments would be welcome.

Did the inspiration come from this week's AP, alan?

I despair of Canon and where they've gone. Even more so when they move the G11 back to 10 megapix.

It's shambles how the old 5D would be more capable on RAW than the 7D, without any in-camera processing to cure the evils of noise as best it can.

If my 20D was to break, then I'd be replacing it with another and an original 5D would follow.

Yup. AP mag. Lovely style.

If I didn't have 9 lenses I'd give up on Canon and buy either a Nikon for picture quality and higher ISO performance or a Sony for in body IS and decent performance too. Whatever, if I was just buying a DSLR now Canon wouldn't be on my radar.

Interesting comments about the Canon range. Most of the people I do my photography night classes use Canons and with are obsessed with getting a 5D mkII. I've never got on with the handling and menus of Nikons (D40, D50 and D70) and much preferred the Canon 350Ds and 400Ds I've tried. I'm still plenty happy with my Sonys. A full frame like an A900 would be great but I'm not too fussed with going down that route, especially as I'd need an uprated computer to handle the 24MP files!

I also think that over-processed, particularly over sharpened shots, seem to have become popular for some reason. Overuse of HDR and very heavily saturated colours seem to be the order of the day as well.

Someone posted some shots of wild birds on dslruser.co.uk and got a great response but to me it looked like the background was either blurred artificially using software or the birds were differentially sharpened. Either way the birds all looked unnaturally separated.

I do wonder if my shots ever look over-saturated, as the screen profile of my iMac is rather dark compared to ones in work or my Dad's Samsung.

I wouldn't worry too much Matt, it's a personal preference thing and if you like them that's the main thing. There hasn't been much wrong with the stuff you've posted here!

I've been given a loan of a Spyder2 Express screen calibrator by the mate I do wedding photos with. There are quick marked differences between the screens of our computers so calibration should address that.
