I think he did an awful lot for F1, but it's been losing its way, with gradually increasing speed, for a good number of years.  Should have gone at least ten years ago.

How he can say he was pushed out when he sold up, I don't know.

Heard Eddie Jordan being interviewed oin the way in to work and he said all Bernoie's deals were done on the basis of a handshake.  He (Bernie) also never took notes in a notepad, remembered everything in his memory from which he recalled without error.  Remarkable man

Careful what we wish for, but to be honest Bernie has not embraced modern media tech in the manner that motoGP has. His earlier statement about overtaking ("there's lots of overtaking in motoGP but I don't see that being as popular as F1") has also come back to bite his arse as tracks drop F1 and extend their motoGP contracts as the crowds flock to them.

That said the only reason we're even celebrating / commenting / know about F1 is down to the drive and determination he showed in the golden era (70s-80s) to drive the sport into the spotlight so whatever bollocks has occurred in the past 10-20 years can pass. Thanks Bernie for filling our Sundays with colourful cars and sunshine.

Much bigger question is what can the current lot do to make it more appealing? Let's start another (serious ) thread on that.

It basically came about from all the teams each having to negotiate a prize fund and appearance fee from the circuit organisers, a job that your average Garagista looked on with pure hatred.

Good ol Bernie being the lovely chap he is agreed to take care of this job and give all the teams more income and he'd take a small slice off the top as his fee. All this was done whilst he owned Brabham I think. Now Bernie obviously turned out to be rather good at this job and switched from the circuit owners screwing over the teams to the teams, or Bernie in this case, screwing over the circuits.

The teams now bitch obviously because they're vast empires are controlled by a funny looking dwarf from Norfolk but you can' argue his delivered huge amounts of cash to the teams.

Absolutely. Bernie Ecclestone has been the best leader in world motorsport. This will be unpopular, but F1 benefited being run as a dictatorship with a vision from one man. There wasn’t a committee of different people and different opinions, therefore arguments and crap solutions. Even if he was occasionally wrong, it was Bernie’s way. But he got most things right, and the teams went along with his way of selling media rights and expansion of the sport into new markets.

In many areas of the world F1 is the only type of motorsport that exists. Similarly, NASCAR is the only motorsport that exists to most Americans. So what’s the parallel? NASCAR has also been run like a dictatorship for decades, by the France family. One might disagree with things that the France family have gone, but it can’t be disputed that they’ve kept NASCAR as top dog in America, and it’s grown into one of America’s biggest sports.

All sorts of nonsense has been made up over the years. Bernie apparently killed Group C, Bernie killed CART back in its heyday. Rubbish. Both series had inconsistent and weak leadership with no focus on what mattered, so they went to the wall.

Was it Bernie all on his own? Nope. Whilst Bernie essentially ran F1 like a one-man band for decades, he was massively helped by his ally Max Mosley. The FIA is supposed to act as an independent regulator, but the two certainly worked in tandem on a number of affairs – whilst not interfering in each other’s affairs. Bernie has never really liked Jean Todt as FIA President; a bit too democratic, too eager to make everyone happy and too interested in road-relevance.

Whilst Bernie’s stubbornness has been a major obstacle to getting F1 digitally competitive, I still think his overall stance is correct. TV is still king in terms of media rights, despite the growth of social media and the internet. That isn’t to say that digital content isn’t important, it absolutely is. I think Bernie actually destroyed his own legacy in this regard; he was instrumental in getting F1 on free-to-air TV in many international markets, so it was accessible like football for viewers. However, it was decided that the sport would move to subscription-only networks; this limited viewership and reduced scope for the accidental viewer – and that accidental viewer is what made F1 more than just a sport watched by motorsport fanatics.

I seriously doubt that Bernie’s replacement, the former ESPN Marketing Chief will command the same respect, fear and attention that Bernie radiated in the paddock. When Mr E walked down the pitlane on a Friday morning, even the marshals looked frightened!

Bernie’s departure opens up a lot of new opportunities. More generally, I hope that Liberty’s ownership will improve the sport where it matters; vastly louder cars, less downforce and therefore naturally better racing with no gimmicks needed. It looks like that Ross Brawn’s approach doesn’t quite correlate with Jean Todt’s. It was Jean Todt’s desire to have these hybrid V6’s, but as Ross Brawn pointed out, the investment required  itself has not only been astronomical, it has only benefited the mass car manufacturers when most of the teams are independent outfits. If you want to build more technological cars, please go to LMP1!
