The first one reminds me of the start of Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods, in which he hikes the Appalachian Trail.  Preparation for which involves setting up camp in his basement and reading a book about bear attacks.  The author describes bears as intelligent, hugely strong and very curious, and seems to steer you in the direction that it's very hard to know how to deal with a bear attack.  Some will generally, but not always, leave you alone of you play dead.  He also counsels against climbing a tree, because bears are excellent climbers and wryly observes that you 'will merely end up fighting a bear up a tree.'

A Good Book.

I wonder if this is la-di-dah enough, Nick?

The Edge with Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin is a good film if you like all things Bear-related.  Great score too, I've got it somewhere,  composed by Jerry Goldsmith.

Quote:
[after successfully fighting a bear]
Charles Morse: For all my life, I've have wanted to do something that was, um, that was unequivocal.
Robert Green: Well, Charlie, I certainly think this qualifies.
Charles Morse: Or something.
Robert Green: See, Charles, that's why they call it personal growth. A month ago, old Smokey here would've reared up, you probably would've called your lawyer!
Charles Morse: Nah, I wouldn't do that to an animal.

Quote:
Robert Green: [Eating] Wish we had some salt.
Charles Morse: You know, you can, uh... you can season meat with gunpowder. Did you know that?
Robert Green: Wish we had some gunpowder.

Having crossed parts of the Appalachian Trail the other week, I am interested to re-read this book.

Re Bears and avoiding ending up as a main course I read recently that someone asked an American tour guide (probably in the Everglades) if you were likely to be attacked by an Alligator if you were carrying a torch.

The reply was 'it depends how fast you were carrying it'.

I do love Bill Bryson and having just finished the latest Ian Rankin novel, I'm tempted to dig out a walk in the woods as it was one of my favourites only bettered by The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid.

One of the best signs I've seen in a while, well more of a placard but woth it none the less:

... and appropriate to this thread as it's in the OP's home town.

I didn't bother re-reading it, I just listened to the audiobook in the car instead!

Reminds me, I have Down Under on audio somewhere, too. Must make a disc.

When I was at work the truck, which came to empty the fat from our restaurant drains, was amusing. The name on the side was 'Blockbusters'.

I'd have to see them free & un-restrained to make that judgement. As an aside, meet Francoise Boufhal and those, Gentlemen, are a (allegedly) natural 28H

I don't know why, but I find this to be one of the sweetest things on the whole internet, like Bill Stickers is an analogy for the common man. I'm very tempted to write a short story on it, as it fascinates me so much in a way I can't comprehend.
