Well, I ordered a Peugeot 308 SW and against all odds, that's what I got:



This was actually a very competent and comfortable car. It was a diesel and I think 1.6 but it was remarkably punchy from 2,000 to 3,500 and was very quiet at all speeds, covering up the tractor sounds very well, even at tickover. It was much much more refined than the Skoda Fastback diesel hire car we were in when going to a restaurant.

The ride was firmer than I expected from a French car but still very compliant and on the motorway it sailed along at 120Km/h with very little wind, tyre or engine noise: it was impressive.

The interior was also a pretty decent standard of generally soft feel plastics although the smaller, lower steering wheel took a bit of getting used to with the instruments sticking up above it:



The steering itself was not the modern too light feel but something much more akin to an old hydraulic setup. There was no way to push the car to see how it felt nearer the limits but I was pleasantly surprised by the weight of the steering.

In fact, overall I liked it. For a holiday car it took all the luggage, cruised very well and sipped fuel at approximately 40mpg based on my fill up, which included lots of slow stop start Marbella driving.

This is the view I enjoyed from the balcony though so driving wasn't really high on the agenda of things to do:

In Marbella at the Puente Romano apartments, not the hotel, which is basically attached but costs 3 times as much and doesn't have anything like as nice a pool area.

EDIT: The hotel rooms are basically the same as the apartments but smaller, with no cooking or washing facilities. Apart from breakfast (and a steady stream of well known, well healed and wannabe people, if that's your thing) I can't think of any good reason to stay at the hotel. Even an off season week costs about £600 more at the hotel and in high season it's £000's more.

Drove a hatch 308 on the Megane launch, I actually really liked it and thought it was one of the better competitors there; still struggled with the dash display being above the steering wheel though.

I thought it was quirky. It's a diesel though so rev counters aren't really essential other than to remind you to change into 6th because the smooth, quiet engine was making so little noise you hadn't realised you were still in 5th!

They are small, yes!

Our DS4 has a slightly older version (euro5) version of the same engine and every now and then I have to remind Mrs FB that as we have paid for 6th gear, she might as well take the benefit!

Sometimes there is a bit of a car or something about a car which makes me marvel every time I interact with it. I had meant to mention this originally and totally forgot: every estate car I have ever shut the boot on (except my friends automatic Merc, which you don't really touch) has sounded a bit cheap or has had a bit of a rattle. This Peugeot was different. The boot closed as though it were a normal door on a very top end car: totally solid, no rattle, no cheap echo, just as it should be. The doors were the same so well done Peugeot.

The gear change wasn't that great and a bit notchy/rubbery although I do wonder if some of that is down to me using the other hand and having the retaining spring acting in the opposite direction from a RHD car.

The car doesn't really do anything for me looks wise but it is most definitely a significant engineering upgrade from anything French that I have driven previously.

One of the most disappointing features of my C-Max is how tinny the tailgate sounds when closed... I don't know if ALF would like to comment on his, but after the fairly solid sound made by the passenger doors, it does make me wonder just how strong (or otherwise) the "fifth door" is.

A solid feel to the door handle and the way the doors / boot closes has a huge impact on the way a car feels (to me anyway).  Even the 3 series saloon had a 'clang' to the boot closing and the door handles/doors feel light compared to the 5 series.  The Passat was pretty good in those areas.

The electric boot with soft close on the 535d is excellent and based on observations of other cars, pretty quick in its operation so it doesn't frustrate either.

The tailgate on the 370 closes with a decent 'thunk' but I imagine it's a fairly hefty thing anyway.

it seems a guy at evo thinks this new Peugeot idea is a load of bollocks too




Every new Peugeot I've sat in (very briefly drove a 208) has been the same.  Do you have to be really short or really tall for it to work?  It seems if you are average height, Peugeot want you to adjust your driving position to be able to see! fuck off

It clearly works for some people and not others. I'm in the camp that feels it is just a gimmick, does not work and I can't see the point.

If Peugeot didn't find it hard enough to sell cars they happily go and ostracize half the car buying populace by designing a new instrument cluster when there was nothing wrong with how everyone else does it. A shame as the new GTi's are supposedly not half bad.

I suspect that if every driver takes up the correct driving position then the dials will be visible to all. However, for many reasons we all don't take up the textbook correct seating position and the traditional layout gives more scope for still seeing the dials if you like a seat that's higher, a long-legged set up, or have shorter arms etc.

For a number of years I drove my second Punto (my first car with an adjustable wheel and height adjustable seat) with the seat low and the wheel high with the view this gave me most space - one day I collected it from service and the seat was still low but the wheel had also been set low, my first action was to push the seat back where it belonged then I intended to adjust the wheel back up, but after doing the first part found my perfect driving position - I'd been under the misconception that I needed the wheel high. I've no doubt that if I drove like this then the dials would look as they do in that picture, but I don't - I now always have the wheel as low as possible to clear the top of my legs and nothing more, it is substantially more comfortable anyway and in the case of when I've driven the Peugeot's with the dials like this I have a perfect view of the dials which sit there nicely just below my eyeline so that I can get a quick look barely taking my eyes off the road.

There are plenty of cars with drivers seats that don't adjust low enough, no clutch footrest, lack of adjustment on the wheel and so on which are a genuine piece of bad design but the Peugeot wheel isn't although not everybody will feel comfortable with it - I've been on the 2008 forum for a number of years have originally looked to buy one and keep popping in there, most people who comment on it suggest the layout is some variation of brilliant, others come on the forum saying they like the car but didn't get on with the wheel then invariably return once people suggest how they set it up to say how good they now find it - some don't of course and can't get on with it.

I don't think it's a height thing specifically, it's more a case of working out a good driving position which might be different to what people are used to. Plenty of cars, to me, have he dials cut off at the top (being tall and preferring the wheel low), it's horses for courses.
